Of Quarantine and Driver’s Licenses

As the quarantine continues, you may be worried about your driver’s license expiring soon. All DMV offices are currently closed.
But there is no need to worry. Most (if not all) state DMVs have issued orders to automatically extend your license if it has expired or will expire during the quarantine.
In New Jersey, the DMV has extended all driver’s licenses, IDs and vehicle registrations expiring before May 31 by two months. New York has extended all licenses that expired on March 1 and later until further notice.
So check your local DMV website for announcements and guidance.

1. “Will my pending USCIS application be processed?” 

– YES. All pending applications with USCIS are still being processed. There are no in-person interviews and biometrics (fingerprint) appointments are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Any person may still file applications and they will be received and processed.

2. “What happens to my immigration court hearing?” 

– If you are not in detention and your court is closed during there quarantine period, your hearing will be cancelled and rescheduled. A new hearing notice will be sent by the court to your address on file. If you are in detention, your hearing will proceed.

3. “Can I file for unemployment benefits if I lose my job?” 

– YES, if you are legally authorized to work and have a valid work permit in the United States.

If you are a victim of a crime in the United States, you may be eligible to apply for a U-visa. A U-visa lets victims of certain crimes who meet certain requirements stay in the United States legally for four (4) years. After three years of having U-visa status, you may apply for a green card or permanent residence (and may eventually apply to become a US citizen). With a U-visa, you can work legally in the United States. In addition, your immediate family members may also be granted the same status.
